Nate
Thereâs more to this than heâs saying, but do I want to push him about it, about talking to me? No, not now. Iâm happy to let us be us, to be together, for now.
I open the door and pay the delivery guy. The food smells great, and my stomach rumbles. Iâm grinning when I turn around to Jem, but thereâs something wrong, very wrong. My boy is curled up tight in the corner of the large sectional sofa, his knees tucked up under his chin and his arms wrapped tight around them. Without saying a word, I take the food into the kitchen. I set the oven to low and slide the foil containers onto the shelves to keep warm. The food will be good in there for a while.
I walk over to the sofa, where heâs still huddled up. âJem.â I cup his beautiful face in my hands. âTalk to me, angel. Thereâs nothing you can say that will stop me from loving you. Tell me whatâs wrong.â
âItâs nothing, not really, not anymore. We had a change in beliefs. I am who I am. I donât want to or ever will change that. I suddenly didnât fit into their idea of what a son is. One minute I was loved and cared for. The next they turned their back on me.â
âBecause youâre gay?â I cringe at the thought of what they may have done to him.
âOf course because Iâm gay and effeminate and choose satin and lace over cotton. Because thereâs no place in their twisted version of the bible for something like me. To them, I became a thing, not a person.â Jem speaks quietly, so matter-of-factly. I would have preferred him to be shouting, being angry, even.
âSomething? What the fuck is that supposed to mean?â I bark at him. Itâs the calm blink of his eyes that makes me rein it in. âYou need to tell me, angel. Tell me everything.â
âI donât actually, Nate.â He looks at me blankly, as if heâs devoid of any emotion. I flinch at him calling me by my name. I may have crossed a line heâs not ready to go over himself.
âIâm sorry. Youâre right. This is your story. You can tell me when youâre ready.â I lean forward and kiss his mouth.
âIâm hungry,â he mumbles against my lips. I nip his bottom lip with my teeth.
âThen I will feed you, boy.â I smirk, pushing myself upright from the sofa. âWhere do you want to eat?â
âIn bed.â Jem sighs, untangling his legs from his arms, then wanders toward the bedroom.
When I carry the food in on a tray I found on the top of his fridge, Jem is propped up against the headboard. Heâs taken his T-shirt off, but with the cover up to his waist, I canât tell if heâs naked underneath. I hope so.
âDo you do this often? Eating in bed?â I ask after setting the tray down and removing my top.
âSometimes. Not often, though.â He grabs one of the containers and a fork and digs in.
